Pacific Islanders meet the Bidjigal People

Dolls Point

Sydney & Surrounds

Some years back, La Perouse Indigenous Elder, Tim Ella (RIP), told an incredible story that fascinated all who listened.

When time did not matter, strange visitors came to one of our most iconic beaches in Sydney by an act of God or Mother Nature. A huge storm had raged for a week to the north of the country, a cyclone, and far out to sea, caught in that tempest were native outriggers. Many sunk, others survived but one managed the unthinkable. It washed ashore at Koojah or Coogee Beach some 3,500km from its homeland.“

Kids explore this incredible scenario with Tongan Elder, Martin Maea. Learn how the Islanders survived this strange land, how they integrated with the local Bidjigal people.

Highlights:

  • Children will learn about Tongan and Polynesian culture
  • Children also leanr what they ate and what animals and plants they bought with them on their epic voyages across the mighty Pacific
  • A fun-filled outdoor experience not to be missed

This activity have been designed to run at Dolls Point or onsite at your centre.
